Until a little over a century ago the area now known as Vulgaria was a backwater of underdeveloped petty kingdoms. The discovery of large coal and mineral deposits and the emergence of a strong ruling dynasty changed all that and resulted in rapid industrialisation and modernisation. The encouragement of an unhealthy nationalistic fervour has already caused tension with its immediate neighbours.
